Sustainability Mission
Re-up to improve lifecycles
Kay Chesterfield is a business literally built on the fundamental principles of sustainability: reuse, recycle, reduce. We believe in refurbishing existing contract furniture and breaking the cycle of replacing used pieces with new furnishings, made from valuable raw materials. Re-upholstery not only saves and re-uses plastic, wood and metals, but also celebrates and respects craftsmanship, style and creativity in new and innovative ways. What better way to bring sustainability commitments to life within institutions and workspaces?
Re-up to reduce f-waste in landfills
Re-upholstery can help solve the significant problems of global f-waste (furniture waste) – not just in landfill materials, but in water and emissions. F-waste is a serious issue, with 9.8 million tons of furniture going into landfills in a single year – landfills that create vast quantities of greenhouse gases and poison ground water. Replacing that furniture in turn, consumes new raw material along with energy and water. Find more facts on our infographic here.
Re-up to work responsibly
Progressive companies and organizations across the nation have all made commitments to improve their sustainable practices. Employees demand them. Prospects and clients seek them out. Boards and shareholders expect them and the returns they deliver. Through the years, Kay Chesterfield has prevented thousands of pieces of furniture from going to landfills. To make that kind of contribution, we collaborate with designers and our furniture dealership partners on green-minded projects for Apple, Genentech, Kaiser Permanente, Kirkland & Ellis LLP, San Francisco State University, St Regis Hotels & Resorts and San Francisco International Airport and others. The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) spotlighted Kay Chesterfield’s guidance for integrating re-upholstery into company-wide sustainability plans in a recent FMJ magazine article. A Facility Executive magazine story also highlighted Kay Chesterfield’s work for major institutions.
